President Lee Jae-myung is set to hold his first summit with Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on October 30, marking the first Korea–Japan leaders’ meeting since her inauguration.
The meeting, taking place on the sidelines of the APEC summit week in Gyeongju, is expected to reaffirm bilateral trust based on the restored “shuttle diplomacy” framework between Seoul and Tokyo. Takaichi, known for her hardline conservative views, has recently expressed her commitment to improving relations with South Korea, drawing attention to what direction the discussions may take.
President Lee’s talks with Takaichi are part of a packed day that includes six bilateral meetings in total.
His first engagement will be a luncheon summit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, focusing on strengthening cooperation in security and defense amid shifting global dynamics.
Lee will also hold separate bilateral meetings with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Vietnamese President Luong Cuong, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
