President Lee Jae-myung said in an interview published Thursday by TIME magazine that the United States’ demands in ongoing tariff talks were “too strict,” warning that he could face impeachment if he accepted them. “I asked the U.S. negotiating team for a reasonable alternative,” Lee said, describing Washington’s initial position as excessively rigid.
The remarks came as Lee faces mounting challenges over a $350 billion Korea-to-U.S. investment fund, a key element in Seoul-Washington economic ties. TIME noted it was not surprising that Lee both praised President Donald Trump’s diplomacy on North Korea and urged renewed dialogue with Pyongyang, given the pressures of the trade talks.
Lee also underlined South Korea’s role as a bridge between great powers. “By strengthening ties with the White House, Korea is well positioned to serve as a bridge for exchange and cooperation in the region,” he said. “We will join the U.S. in its supply chain framework, but we must also manage relations carefully to avoid antagonizing China.”
On North Korea, Lee said Trump would deserve a Nobel Peace Prize if he makes progress on resolving the issue. TIME added that Lee may see an opportunity in Trump’s well-known fascination with the award.
