President Lee Jae-myung said on August 21 that his administration will create conditions for denuclearization by combining close cooperation with the United States and active dialogue with North Korea.
In an exclusive interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun ahead of his visit to Tokyo, Lee stated, “Our policy direction is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Step one is freezing nuclear weapons and missiles, step two is reducing them, and step three is achieving complete denuclearization.”
On the contentious issues of the wartime comfort women agreement and forced labor compensation, Lee said, “For the Korean people, these past agreements are very difficult to accept. However, since they are promises made at the state level, overturning them would not be desirable.”
