Rep. Kim Sang-wook of the Democratic Party (DP) said on July 23 that Gender Equality Minister nominee Kang Sun-woo has effectively “failed the public acceptance test,” calling on her to personally address abuse of power allegations and show sincere remorse.
Speaking on YTN Radio’s “News Fighting,” Kim stated, “The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family relies heavily on cooperation with related agencies, so public acceptance is even more critical than for other ministries. I believe Kang received a failing grade in that area.”
Referring to statements from women’s groups demanding Kang’s resignation, Kim added, “Even if her morality and capabilities are assumed to be verified, if the public cannot accept her, then she’s unfit to serve as a Cabinet member.”
He also warned that the controversy could lead to divisions within the party. “While some hardline supporters inside our party are defending her, more moderate supporters, civic groups, and center-right forces are criticizing her. The party now stands at a crossroads: Will it move toward inclusive, accountable politics or become more closed off?”
Kim also criticized the ruling People Power Party (PPP), saying it “stands on the verge of becoming an anti-state, anti-constitutional, anti-conservative, and anti-democratic organization.” He argued that the DP is now carrying out the proper role of a conservative force by upholding national principles and common sense in the absence of normal PPP functions.
“This has triggered a crisis on the progressive side, where other progressive parties hesitate to criticize the DP rationally out of fear it would empower the PPP,” he said.
