Two Seasons, Two Strangers, a Japanese film starring South Korean actress Shim Eun-kyung, has been officially invited to the International Competition section of the 78th Locarno International Film Festival, according to Korean distributor At9 Film on July 10.
Directed by acclaimed rising filmmaker Sho Miyake, the film is based on two manga by Yoshiharu Tsuge — Seaside Sketch and Ben-san from Honyaradou. The story follows a screenwriter named Lee (played by Shim) who experiences an emotional transformation after meeting a guesthouse owner, Benzo (played by Shinichi Tsutsumi), during a winter trip to a snowy coastal village.
Miyake has become a festival regular in recent years, having been invited to the Berlin International Film Festival three times in a row with And Your Bird Can Sing (2020), Small, Slow but Steady (2023), and All the Long Nights (2024).
Shim Eun-kyung shared her thoughts on the invitation, saying, “It’s an honor to be part of the director’s beautiful cinematic world.”
Festival organizers praised the film as “a work that represents the highest level of Japanese cinema” and commended it for “its delicate exploration of the essence of human nature.”
