Kim Byung-ki, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on June 19 that the latest supplementary budget was designed with the party’s long-standing principle of universal relief payments in mind and includes additional support for vulnerable groups.
Speaking at a party policy coordination meeting at the National Assembly, Kim said, “This was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of Policy Committee Chair Jin Sung-joon.”
He added, “The government is set to pass the emergency relief budget during today’s Cabinet meeting. I hope this measure will help ease the burden felt by our citizens.”
Kim urged the National Assembly to act swiftly, noting that “we must now move quickly to reconstitute the expired Special Committee on Budget and Accounts and elect a new chair to begin review of the supplementary budget.”
Turning to the opposition People Power Party, he said, “It’s time to let go of obstruction and stubbornness. Let’s work together, across party lines, to pass the budget even one day sooner and help resolve the livelihoods of the people.”
He concluded, “This is how we can rescue a nation shaken by internal strife and help save the people from hardship.”
