tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl , also known as "Gyeonwoo and the Fairy," is set to premiere at 8:50 p.m. on June 23, bringing a fresh take on the classic tale through a youth romance wrapped in mysticism and destiny.

Director Kim Yong-wan, speaking at an online press conference on June 17, shared the heart behind the project: “When I first read the script, I felt the writer's strong desire to protect these kids. I wanted to tell a story about never letting go of their hands while they try to save their first love.” He added, “I hope viewers laugh, cry, and connect with the warmth of this coming-of-age romance.”

Based on a popular webtoon of the same name, the drama follows Bae Gyeon-woo, a boy fated to die, and Park Seong-ah, a teenage shaman determined to save him. The series blends shamanism, ghostly confrontations, and emotional growth in a genre-bending narrative.

Jo Yi-hyun stars as Park Seong-ah, an ordinary high school student by day and a shaman known as “Cheonji Seonnyeo” by night. “I was deeply immersed in the world of shamanism when this project came to me—it felt like fate,” she said. “I believed taking on this role would help me grow as an actor.” To prepare, Jo spent three months receiving professional guidance to naturally portray the shaman rituals.

Chu Young-woo plays Bae Gyeon-woo, a prickly and isolated teen who believes his presence brings misfortune. “He builds emotional walls to protect himself. I could relate to that, and I thought I could express it well,” he said. Of working with Jo again since School 2021, he noted, “She’s become even more refined in her acting.”

Cha Kang-yoon joins as Pyo Ji-ho, a sincere and straightforward classmate who stands by Seong-ah and supports Gyeon-woo. “I tried to keep his innocence intact throughout my performance,” he shared.

A new character not in the original webtoon, Yeomhwa, will be played by Choo Ja-hyun. “At first, I thought it was a cameo, but as I read more of the script, I realized the role was significant,” she said. “Working with these fresh younger actors has been inspiring.”

Director Kim summarized the show as “a story that captures the thrill of first love, the struggle against spirits, the journey of youth, and deep humanism.” He concluded, “This cast feels like it was chosen by fate itself.”
