To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, actress Song Hye-kyo and Prof. Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University have donated 10,000 Korean history guidebooks to Saipan and Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory.
The guidebooks, printed in both Korean and English, have been placed at the information desk of World Resort Saipan, a popular destination for Korean visitors. They offer information about sites of historical significance such as locations of forced Korean labor, a memorial for Korean victims, a former comfort women cave, and the loading point of the atomic bomb.
“Many Korean historical sites overseas are not well-preserved,” Prof. Seo said. “Ongoing interest and visits by our citizens are crucial to maintaining these important sites.”
For those unable to visit in person, Seo added that the full guidebook files are available on the website Stories of Korean History Abroad.
This donation is part of a broader Liberation Day 80th anniversary project. Over the past 14 years, Seo and Song have marked major historical anniversaries by donating Korean-language guidebooks, signs in Hangeul, and relief artworks honoring independence activists to 38 sites around the world. All projects have been planned by Prof. Seo and sponsored by Song.
