The Democratic Party met with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik on June 16 to request a plenary session for the appointment of chairs to two key committees: the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts and the Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Democratic Party spokesperson Kim Hyun-jung said, “Appointing the chairs of the judiciary and budget committees is urgent for processing livelihood bills and the supplementary budget.” She added that the party has formally asked the speaker to schedule the plenary session for Thursday, June 19.

“Beyond coordinating with the government for the supplementary budget, we must first fill the vacant budget committee chair position,” Kim continued. “Once the opposition elects its new floor leader this afternoon, we will begin negotiations.”

Speaker Woo emphasized dialogue and cooperation, saying, “We must carefully gauge the will of the people, engage in discussions with both the government and the opposition, and find a wise path forward.” He acknowledged Kim’s commitment to restoring dialogue and addressing reform and economic issues, adding, “The public has high expectations.”

Woo further noted, “Domestically, we must stabilize the faltering economy and livelihoods, and internationally, we must navigate intense geopolitical competition to secure national interest and peace. This is what the people expect from the new administration and this National Assembly.”

He emphasized that “meeting those expectations is key to the success of the new government and a significant responsibility for Floor Leader Kim. As the ruling party and largest party, the Democratic Party bears heavy responsibility, but the path forward always lies with the people.”

Woo also suggested reviving regular luncheons with the speaker and floor leaders of both major parties to improve communication. “Through open dialogue, we can unify public will and move forward together.”

In response, Kim said, “After taking office, I was briefed on the economic situation, and it’s far worse than expected. We’ve inherited the government at its worst. If it had simply collapsed, recovery would be clearer—but this is more like a ‘hit and run’ by the previous administration.” He pledged to do his utmost to restore order and normalize the state.

He concluded, “We’re not just chasing two rabbits, but three—ending the insurrection, restoring livelihoods, and achieving national unity. I ask for your guidance and support as we pursue all three.”
