On the morning of June 4, his first day in office, President Lee Jae-myung spoke by phone with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Kim Myung-soo at 8:07 a.m. from his residence, receiving a report on the transfer of military command authority.
During the call, President Lee emphasized, “I ask that you closely monitor North Korea’s movements and maintain a flawless readiness posture, grounded in the combined U.S.-ROK defense posture.”
The presidential office stated that Lee also expressed confidence in the military, saying, “As president, I trust in the loyalty and capabilities of our armed forces. Please do your utmost to ensure the military continues to earn the love and trust of the people,” while commending the dedication of service members.
President Lee further noted, “It was commendable that our service members responded cautiously to unjust orders during the emergency martial law crisis, preventing greater public chaos.”
Chairman Kim reported that “there are no issues with our military’s readiness” and briefed Lee on the current status of North Korean military activity. In response, Lee stressed, “Please ensure that our troops remain focused on their duties without anxiety, and do everything possible so that the public has no concerns about national security.”
