Actor Choi Jung-woo, known for his commanding presence in dramas such as Master's Sun and Madame Ok’s Story, passed away on May 27 at the age of 68.
His agency, Bless ENT, confirmed the news, stating, “Choi Jung-woo unexpectedly passed away this morning.” While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, it is known that he had struggled with depression and panic disorder.
Choi debuted in 1975 with the play The Life of an Actor and went on to perform with renowned theater troupes such as Madang Sesil and Sinsi. He achieved major success with the 1992 production Please Turn Off the Lights, which he produced and starred in, and followed it with another lead role in 1994's Afraid of Your Changes.
A respected figure in the theater world, Choi received the Grand Prize at the 1990 Seoul Theater Festival and the Best Actor Award at the 1999 Dong-A Theatre Awards. Once hailed as the "prince of the stage," he took a break from acting in the late 1990s to study film in the United States.
From the 2000s onward, Choi transitioned into television and film, earning widespread recognition for his portrayal of authoritative figures such as chief secretaries and police officials. His television credits include Master's Sun, My Daughter Seo-young, Painter of the Wind, Madame Ok’s Story, and Quiz of God. On the big screen, he left a lasting impression with roles in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Chaser, and Secret Reunion.
Marking his 50th year in the entertainment industry, Choi had remained active up until recently. His final appearance was in the Watcha original series A Secret Between Us, released in February.
His funeral will be held at Room 5 of the Woori Hospital Funeral Hall in Gimpo. The procession is scheduled for 10 a.m. on May 29.
