Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung will visit eastern Seoul on May 28 to present his future vision for the region, aiming to position it as a livable hub for growth, innovation, and urban development.
In a briefing at the party headquarters, Cho Seung-rae, senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party’s election committee, stated, “Candidate Lee will unveil a blueprint to transform eastern Seoul—an area already emerging as a hub of business, commerce, culture, and transportation—into an even more livable and dynamic urban center.” Lee's itinerary for the day includes stops in Gwangjin, Jungnang, Seongdong, and Dongdaemun districts.
Cho highlighted the historical and contemporary significance of the area. “Cheongnyangni and Wangsimni were major gateways to the eastern capital wall of Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty and have grown into major transportation nodes today. Seongsu, once known as an industrial engine in the 1970s and ’80s, has rebranded itself as a cultural hotspot for younger generations. Gwangjin and Jungnang districts are evolving beyond residential zones into mixed-use districts with great potential,” he said.
Before his public appearances, Lee will join a live broadcast of K-Inisher TV’s stock talk show, “On the Same Boat with 14 Million Retail Investors,” at 2:30 p.m. There, he plans to reiterate his goal of ushering in a “KOSPI 5000 era” and pledge bold reforms to strengthen the stock market and revitalize the Korea Exchange.
At 4:30 p.m., Lee is expected to meet with citizens at Seoul Children’s Grand Park in Gwangjin District. According to Cho, Lee will lay out plans to improve the area’s livability through phased undergrounding of the elevated Line 2 subway tracks and high-density, mixed-use redevelopment projects around transit hubs and Cheonho-daero. For Jungnang District, Lee will propose early construction of the Myeonmok Line, integrated development around the Sinnae train depot, and improvements to residential conditions.
At 6:00 p.m., Lee will continue his campaign at Wangsimni Station, promising initiatives to enhance transportation and education in Seongdong and Dongdaemun districts. “Lee is committed to building a better future for these areas,” Cho said.
“Eastern Seoul encapsulates the city’s past, present, and future,” Cho noted. “While preserving its historical legacy and residential identity, we will reshape it into a hub for culture, entrepreneurship, and youthful energy.”
As the election draws near, Cho emphasized Lee’s determination to connect with voters. “With only six days remaining, Lee will work tirelessly to meet as many citizens as possible,” he said. “We urge voters to consider who is best equipped to revive the regional economy, restore neighborhood businesses, and improve people’s livelihoods."
