South Korea’s cultural heritage will take center stage at the Osaka-Kansai World Expo, with the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Heritage Service announcing a series of events for “Korea Week,” running from May 13 to 17.

Visitors to the Korean Pavilion will experience a blend of traditional heritage and modern technology through a media art exhibition and live performances. A massive LED screen—27 meters wide and 10 meters high—installed in front of the pavilion will display animated visuals of iconic Korean cultural symbols such as the Sipjangsaeng (Ten Symbols of Longevity), Irworobongdo (Sun and Moon Five Peaks), Hansan ramie fabric, and the Inwangjesaekdo painting. The media art installation will remain on view through October 13, when the expo concludes.

Inside the pavilion, a section is also dedicated to the "Visit Korean Heritage" campaign. Launched in 2020, the campaign aims to rediscover and promote the beauty and value of Korea’s foundational cultural assets. A passport-style stamp tour that guides visitors through key heritage sites drew 180,000 participants between 2023 and 2024 alone.

From May 14 to 17, performances highlighting Korea’s intangible cultural heritage will be staged across the expo grounds. Master performers including pansori singer Shin Young-hee, Buddhist dance artist Chae Sang-mook, and geomungo sanjo musician Lee Jae-hwa will convey the depth of Korean emotion through sound and movement. The Korea Heritage Service’s traditional arts troupe will also present festive performances featuring lion dances and sogo (small hand drum) dances.
