Director Hong Sang-soo has been appointed as a jury member for the Feature Film Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

According to the list of jury members posted on the festival’s official website on April 28 (local time), Hong will serve alongside eight other jurors, including jury president Juliette Binoche, American actress Halle Berry, and Indian director and screenwriter Payal Kapadia, to decide the winners of the festival’s top honors, including the Palme d’Or.

Hong is the sixth Korean film figure to serve on the Cannes Feature Film Competition jury, following directors Shin Sang-ok and Lee Chang-dong, actress Jeon Do-yeon, director Park Chan-wook, and actor Song Kang-ho.

The festival organizers noted, "Director Hong is a familiar figure at Cannes, having had four of his feature films invited to the main competition. Cannes itself served as the backdrop for his 20th feature film Claire’s Camera," adding, "He has continued to evolve without losing the concise and intimate atmosphere that characterizes his cinematic style."

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to 24. Although no Korean feature films have been selected for the festival’s official sections, two Korean works have been invited to side programs: director Jung Yu-mi’s animation Mirror in Mind (translated from '안경') to the Critics' Week short film competition, and director Heo Ga-young’s First Summer to the Cinéfondation section for student films.
