The ruling People Power Party (PPP) strongly criticized National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik on April 9 for effectively retracting his proposal to hold a simultaneous presidential election and constitutional referendum. The PPP accused him of caving to opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Lee Jae-myung and his hardline supporters, demanding a public apology.

In a statement, PPP chief spokesperson Shin Dong-wook said, “Speaker Woo, who has surrendered to Lee Jae-myung and his radical base, will be forever remembered as a disgraceful figure. He must immediately apologize to the people for betraying their hopes.”

Shin also criticized Woo for “backing off his own words” and for acting solely “to please the DP leadership.”
