This weekend, the films The Match, which dramatizes the legendary Go rivalry between Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho, and Lobby, a comedy about absurd high-society golf games, will go head-to-head in theaters.
According to the Korea Box Office Information System on April 4, The Match topped the reservation rankings with a 29.6% booking rate, handily outperforming Lobby, which took second place at 14.4%. Lobby is directed by and stars Ha Jung-woo.
The Match, starring Lee Byung-hun and Yoo Ah-in as Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho respectively, also took the lead at the daily box office for two consecutive days. Drawing 50,766 viewers on April 2 and 46,912 on April 3, it held the top spot and brought its total admissions to 924,645 since its release on March 26.
In contrast, Lobby drew 37,157 viewers on its opening day, April 2, and only 22,019 on April 3—roughly half the numbers of The Match, falling short of expectations out of the gate.
While the two Korean films battle it out, Japanese animation Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters – The Last Attack is quietly enjoying box office success. Since its release on March 13, it has consistently ranked 2nd or 3rd in the daily box office, with a total of 560,807 viewers as of April 3.
