The film ‘The Match,’ starring Lee Byung-hun, had an explosive start by dominating the box office during its opening weekend.
According to the Korean Film Council’s Integrated Ticketing System on March 31, ‘The Match’ attracted 544,261 viewers between March 28 and 30. It significantly outperformed the Japanese animation ‘Attack on Titan: The Last Attack,’ which secured second place with 88,971 viewers. Since its release on March 26, the cumulative audience for ‘The Match’ has reached 700,847.
The film portrays the legendary real-life rivalry on the Go board between Korean Go masters Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho. The film, which wrapped production in 2021, was initially slated for release on Netflix in 2023. However, after Yoo Ah-in, who plays Lee Chang-ho, was investigated for alleged propofol use, the release was postponed, and the film was instead shown in theaters.
Meanwhile, Bong Joon-ho's ‘Mickey 17’ drew 60,892 viewers, placing it third behind ‘Attack on Titan.’ This brought its cumulative audience to 2,959,419. Disney’s latest release, Snow White, gathered 29,219 viewers, ranking fifth.
