South Korea’s box office received a major boost during the March 1st holiday period as Bong Joon-ho's 'Mickey 17' scored the biggest opening of the year with over a million moviegoers.
The sci-fi feature starring Robert Pattinson drew 1,047,597 viewers from March 1 to March 3, according to the Korean Film Council. Since its release on February 28, the film's cumulative audience has reached 1,303,007, and it is expected to easily surpass 2 million viewers by the upcoming weekend if it maintains its current momentum.
However, the pace of audience growth for 'Mickey 17' lags behind Bong Joon-ho's previous work, 'Parasite'. When 'Parasite' was released in 2019, it surpassed 1 million viewers in just 2 days, 2 million in 3 days, and 3 million in 4 days.
'Mickey 17' tells the story of a young man named 'Mickey' (played by Robert Pattinson), who volunteers to become a clone for financial gain and is sent to colonize an icy planet.
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios' ambitious project 'Captain America: Brave New World' attracted 119,899 viewers during the weekend, following closely behind 'Mickey 17'.
