To celebrate the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, OTT platforms and theaters have released ambitious new works. This holiday season, viewers can enjoy a variety of genres, including comedy, romance, and occult, making the extended holiday more entertaining.

First, OTT platforms are targeting home viewers with relatively fresh content. Netflix will release an 8-episode series titled "Trauma Center" on the 24th, marking the official start of the Lunar New Year holiday. The series follows the story of Baek Kang-hyuk (played by Ju Ji-hoon), a genius surgeon who struggles to revive a defunct trauma team. The character is inspired by Professor Lee Guk-jong, who saved Captain Seok Hae-kyun, the hero of the Aden Gulf. Based on a web novel, this drama combines the tension of a genius protagonist with quirky humor.

Tving will present "Study Group," a high school action drama set against the backdrop of school life. The series, which premieres on Thursday, follows Yoon Ga-min (played by Hwang Min-hyun), a student who excels in fighting but struggles academically. Despite the humorous premise of fighting to study, the series addresses realistic concerns of youth, including entrance exams and violence. The solid storyline, based on a webtoon, depicts the passion for dreams, conflicts between competition and friendship, and more. Han Ji-eun plays the role of the group leader, Lee Han-kyung, with Cha Woo-min, Lee Jong-hyun, and Shin Soo-hyun also starring.

Disney+ has release "Trigger" on January 15, featuring Kim Hye-soo as the justice-driven Oh So-ryong. The series portrays the efforts of an investigative journalism team, with notable performances by supporting actors Jung Sung-il and Joo Jong-hyuk, and a humorous narrative. Directed by Yoo Sun-dong, the series addresses real-life issues such as religious corruption and animal abuse.

Theaters are drawing attention with spin-offs, sequels, and remakes. "Dark Nuns," starring Song Hye-kyo and Jeon Yeo-bin, will be released on Friday. The film follows two nuns who engage in a dangerous ritual to save Hee-jun (played by Moon Woo-jin) from an evil spirit. Song Hye-kyo's intense and cold character marks a notable transformation in her acting career. "Dark Nuns" is a spin-off of the 2015 film "The Priests," which attracted 5.44 million viewers, and is based on the occult genre.

"Secret That Cannot Be Told," set to release on the 27th, is a remake of the Taiwanese film starring Jay Chou. The film, starring Do Kyung-soo and Won Jin-ah, tells a timeless love story. Do Kyung-soo takes on his first melodramatic role, while Won Jin-ah plays Yoo Jung-ah, the character originally portrayed by Gui Lun-mei. Shin Ye-eun plays Park In-hee, who comes between the two. The film retains the emotional impact of the original while introducing new romantic elements.
