President Yoon Suk-yeol called for the role of the Korean Veterans Association and the establishment of a strong sense of security on Wednesday, saying, “Fake news and instigation through false manipulation are threatening this country’s democracy.”
At a ceremony marking the 71st anniversary of Korea Veterans Association held in Seoul, Yoon said “theories of fake peace” are being disseminated with calls to proactively lift UN Security Council sanctions on the North, disband the UN Command, declare an end to the Korean War, scale back operation of reconnaissance assets and end joint drills with the U.S.”
“You, who have a firm belief in a free Republic of Korea, should protect this country,” Yoon said. “I ask the Korean veterans who are active across the nation with a proper view of history, a responsible view of the state, and a clear view of security, to make Republic of Korea of freedom, peace, and prosperity together.”
The president then pledged to elevate the alliance with the U.S. to one that is nuclear-based while further strengthening security cooperation among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan. “We will firmly protect the free Republic of Korea and defend our people’s safety by strengthening our capability to immediately and overwhelmingly respond to any provocation from the enemy,” he said.
Meanwhile, Yoon invited more than 240 former nurses and miners sent to Germany in 1960s to earn foreign currency for South Korea’s economic development, for a luncheon in Seoul and expressed his gratitude for their contributions to the development of national industrialization in the 1960s.
First lady Kim Keon-hee also attended the event. “Your sweat and dedication were the foundation for the Republic of Korea’s industrialization, and your lives were our nation’s modern history,” Yoon said. “The government will work to ensure your sweat and dedication were not in vain.”
