President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has continued his efforts to support the people’s livelihoods during the Chuseok holiday, plans to focus on improving people’s livelihoods and revitalizing the economy in the remaining second half of the year.
Yoon has set a goal to take care of various economic situations and pending issues in the fourth quarter, focusing on market achievements in his second year in office, and setting the driving force for the ruling party at the same time to win the general election in April next year.
“The government will continue to operate state affairs with an emphasis on revitalizing the economy, including exports and investment, and improving people’s livelihoods, safety, and diplomatic security,” presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon said in a briefing on Tuesday.
Referring to the fact that major industries such as semiconductors, automobiles, and petrochemicals continue to have a strong trade surplus for four consecutive months, Lee said, “We will make efforts to produce tangible results in prices and real estate issues that the pubic directly feels.”
To this end, the presidential office is preparing for the ‘national task inspection meeting’ and the ‘emergency economic meeting.’ The national task inspection meeting is a meeting where President Yoon evaluates the current status of state affairs and communicate with experts from different sectors. It was held in December last year and April this year.
As three major reform tasks involving labor, pension and education, were discussed at the first meeting, and national affairs in the diplomatic and security sectors were dealt with at the second meeting, more specific topics related to people’s livelihoods are likely to be addressed at the third meeting in the fourth quarter. The 5th central and local cooperation meeting, which is expected to be held this month, is likely to focus on balanced regional development measures and pending regional public welfare issues.
The presidential office also explained that the planned overseas trip from November to December, including state visits to the UK and the Netherlands, will focus on economic measures to expand South Korean companies’ outreach.
Meanwhile, President Yoon visited Korean Air’s cargo terminal at the Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, to give solace to the workers last Thursday, the first day of the Chuseok holiday, saying, “Our economy circulates thanks to you.” On the second day of the holiday, the president hosted a luncheon with a group of Korean victims of the 1945 atomic bombing in Hiroshima. On the third and fourth day of the holiday, he met with troops, police officers and firefighters to encourage them.
