President Yoon Suk-yeol’s approval rating stood at 37.5 percent ahead of this week’s first anniversary of his inauguration, a poll showed on Tuesday.
According to the survey commissioned by Yonhap News and Yonhap News TV and conducted by Metrix on 1,000 adults aged 18 or older nationwide Saturday and Sunday, the positive assessment of Yoon’s performance was 37.5 percent, while the negative assessment came to 60 percent.
The positive assessment rate was higher than the average for those aged 60 or older with 63.4 percent, and for those living in Daegu and North Gyeongsang with 57.3 percent.
By region, those regions that exceeded 40 percent are Gangwon and Jeju at 46.3 percent, Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang at 43.2 percent, and Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong at 41.2 percent. Among the respondents who said they support the ruling People Power Party (PPP), 81 percent said they were positive about Yoon’s performance.
In contrast, negative evaluation was high among those in their 30s and 40s with 75.1 percent and 74.7 percent, respectively, while 66 percent of those aged 18 to 29 and 67.3 percent of those in their 50s gave negative feedback on Yoon’s performance.
The poll showed 82.5 percent of respondents living in Gwangju and Jeolla and 64.8 percent of those living in Incheon and Gyeonggi gave a negative assessment. Also, 58.5 percent of respondents living in Seoul gave a negative assessment. Among the respondents who said they were supporters of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), 93.5 percent gave a negative assessment.
The positive assessment by sector was in the order of defense and diplomacy at 39.8 percent, science and technology at 37.6 percent, health and welfare at 36.9 percent, culture at 36.8 percent, and economy at 32 percent.
The negative assessment by sector was in the order of the economy at 63.5 percent, health and welfare at 52.9 percent, defense and diplomacy at 56.2 percent, culture at 54 percent, and science and technology at 52.9 percent.
On Yoon’s visit to the United States last month, 55.5 percent of the respondents gave a positive feedback.
The survey result was within the margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
