CIO checks phone logs of Yoon and his wife: PPP

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has checked the phone logs of main opposition presidential candidate Yoon Suk-youl and his wife, Kim Keon-hee. It has been also confirmed that the CIO checked the phone logs of 78 lawmakers of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), which accounts for nearly 80 percent. 

“We revealed that the Moon Jae-in administration was using all investigative agencies to inspect the opposition candidate,” said Yim Tae-hee, a senior official of the party’s election campaign committee, during a press conference at the National Assembly on Wednesday. “The circumstances show there was illegal surveillance of 78 lawmakers as well as candidate Yoon Suk-youl and his family,” Yim said. A total of 79 lawmakers had their phone logs checked as of 4:30 pm on Wednesday as one lawmaker was additionally included in the list of illegal surveillance after the press conference. 

“The circumstances of illegal surveillance were revealed 10 stances against the candidate and 9 instances against the candidate’s spouse,” Yim said. “I expect the numbers to increase.” Yim said some of the instances involved the prosecution and the police, not the CIO. 

The PPP has demanded the CIO’s chief Kim Jin-wook step down. “I was sure that the CIO would be the investigation office for the main opposition party, and it turned out to be true,” Floor leader Rep. Kim Gi-hyeon said. “The CIO is truly the most illegal organization and should be abolished immediately. CIO’s chief should be impeached immediately,” he added.

Yoon told reporters that he had expected it. “This is legislative fraud against the people,” Yoon said.

“The reasons we need a change of government through the upcoming presidential election are growing one by one,” he said. 

Earlier, Yoon on Facebook that if elected, he will demand accountability from those responsible for the CIO’s illegal actions. “I think the CIO is making a big mistake. We created an investigation agency to investigate high-ranking public officials, but they are not doing what they are told to do. They are working like the G wrote estapo,” he wrote.

Yoon also criticized the government and the ruling Democratic Party (DP), saying, “President Moon and the Democratic Party who called for the establishment of a state anti-corruption investigation body. But why are they so quiet now?” He also pointed out that DP candidate Lee Jae-myung, who claimed that he had a similar experience, for being silent this time. 

Jeon Joo-hye, spokesperson for the People Power Central Election Committee, said, “We demand President Moon Jae-in’s immediate apology for causing this situation.”
