By Ha Man-joo, India correspondent, AsiaToday - Hyundai India has the lowest recall rate for its vehicles, a data of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed on Sunday.

According to Indian media outlets and SIAM data, a total of 1,085,064 vehicles have been recalled so far in India by various companies since SIAM initiated a voluntary recall policy in July 2012. In Hyundai's case, it has recalled only 0.1% of the total. Hyundai, the second largest car maker in India, had the second-lowest recall rate among 11 manufacturers with Ford, Honda, Maruti Suzuki, General Motors, Mahindra, Nissan, Toyota, Renault, Audi, Hyundai, and Jaguar in ranking order.

Hyundai's such achievement is noteworthy, considering the Indian society's interest in car recalls. Honda India and Volkswagen's massive recall are making headlines in Indian media outlets.

India's influential newspaper Business Standard (BS) covered Honda's and Volkswagen's recall on its front pages on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. It shows how India, the world's fourth largest car market following China, US, and Japan, is interested in vehicle safety issues.

The local media reported on Saturday that Honda has decided to recall 223,578 vehicles to replace airbag inflators, the single-largest recall in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Through the exercise, the company will recall 13,073 units of the CR-V manufactured between 2004 and 2011, 54,290 units of the Civic manufactured between 2003 and 2012, 140,508 units of the City manufactured between 2007 and 2012, and 15,707 units of the Jazz models manufactured between 2009 and 2011.

BS reported on Sunday that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered Volkswagen to recall 482,000 vehicles for illegally installing software in its vehicles to evade standards for reducing smog. The newspaper said the German carmaker could face fines of $37,500 for each recalled vehicle, or a possible overall penalty of $18 billion.
