Jung Chung-rae, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), traveled across South Chungcheong Province and Incheon on May 27 to lead support rallies for the upcoming June 3 local elections. Delivering a campaign speech in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, Chairman Jung underscored the "ruling party premium" while shifting blame onto the People Power Party (PPP) for the collapse of a proposed merger between Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province. Conversely, Jang Dong-hyuk, Chairman of the PPP, canceled his scheduled on-field campaign trail due to the aftermath of a structural collapse at the Seosomun Overpass in Seodaemun District, Seoul, focusing instead on launching an offensive against the administration and the ruling party during a Central Election Campaign Committee meeting.

Chairman Jung initiated his tour in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, stumping for Kim Young-bin, a candidate running in the congressional by-election for the Gongju-Buyeo-Cheongyang district, alongside Kim Jeong-seop, a candidate for Gongju mayor.

"For Gongju to thrive, it requires fiscal budgets and legislative backing," Jung remarked. "A merger between South Chungcheong Province and Daejeon translates to a massive influx of budget allocations." He appealed for voter support, adding, "If you elect a DPK mayor and congressman to represent Gongju, blood will naturally run thicker than water."

Jung redirected the responsibility for the collapse of the Daejeon-South Chungcheong merger talks entirely toward the PPP. "The PPP governors of South Chungcheong and mayors of Daejeon were the first to champion this integration, yet they ultimately derailed it under various pretexts," he criticized. "Even a child knows exactly where the responsibility for this failed merger lies."

Following the rally, Jung traveled to Incheon to maintain momentum, stumping for Incheon mayoral candidate Park Chan-dae, Ganghwa County governor candidate Han Yeon-hee, and Yeongjong District head candidate Son Hwa-jeong.

Meanwhile, the PPP calibrated its field campaign itinerary. Chairman Jang called off his entire public appearance schedule after being briefed on the Seosomun Overpass collapse in Seodaemun District, Seoul, the previous day. Consequently, Jang refrained from outdoor stumping and confined his activities to presiding over the Central Election Campaign Committee meeting at the party's central headquarters in Seoul. In his stead, Floor Leader Song Eon-seok traveled to provide campaign support across Hanam in Gyeonggi Province and sectors of Gangwon Province.

During the committee session, Jang leveled criticism against the opposing camp, stating, "Observing the recent conduct of Lee Jae-myung and the DPK, it feels as though we are living in a sequestered world engineered solely for Lee's survival." He added, "Rhetoric regarding consumer prices, exchange rates, and interest rate countermeasures has vanished from Lee's vocabulary, replaced strictly by commentary regarding stock prices."

"It is the corporations that drive stock values upward, whereas stabilizing consumer prices, foreign exchange rates, and interest rates remains the fundamental responsibility of the administration and the governing party," Jang argued. "They have thoroughly mismanaged their own policy obligations, yet they are taking credit for milestones achieved independently by enterprises."

Jang further applied political leverage by focusing on national security and foreign policy vulnerabilities. "North Korea executed its eighth missile launch of the year into the West Sea," he noted. "By conducting 'mixed salvos' that pair close-range ballistic missiles with multiple rocket launchers, North Korea has explicitly demonstrated that its primary tactical target is the Republic of Korea."
