South Korea’s presidential office welcomed the tentative wage agreement reached between Samsung Electronics management and its labor union, calling it a “broad-minded decision” made for the benefit of the nation and the public.
Kang Yoo-jung, senior presidential spokesperson at the Blue House, said on May 21 that the agreement reflected combined efforts by government officials, including the labor minister, who continued mediation efforts until the final stage of negotiations.
“We appreciate the broad-minded decision made for the country and the people,” Kang said in a statement.
Samsung Electronics management and the union signed a tentative agreement on the company’s 2026 wage negotiations late on May 20, just one day before a planned general strike.
The union is scheduled to hold a vote on ratifying the tentative agreement from May 22 to 27.
