Independent presidential candidate Hwang Kyo-ahn on May 19 called for abolishing South Korea’s 52-hour workweek system, arguing it hampers the productivity of world-class industries like semiconductors.
Speaking during a televised debate hosted by the National Election Commission at SBS Prism Tower in Seoul’s Mapo District, Hwang said, “Top-tier semiconductor companies are unable to perform at their best because of the 52-hour cap.” He warned that falling behind in global competition could lead to “economic exploitation” of the country.
“To save the nation, we need a solution to the 52-hour workweek,” he said. “We must remember that this system has actually increased the number of people taking second jobs.”
In contrast, fellow independent candidate Song Jin-ho opposed abolishing the policy. “Given the current economic crisis, now is not the right time to scrap the 52-hour system,” he argued. “Instead, I propose selectively reintroducing a six-day workweek.”
