EXO‘s Baekhyun apologizes for his comments about depression

EXO's Baekhyun has apologized for his comments regarding depression.

On January 2, Baekyun posted an apology letter on his Instagram account, "Hello, this is Baekhyun. I'm writing because I'd like to personally apologize for the statement at the fan signing on December 30."

Previously, the singer was criticized for his statement regarding depression during the fan signing event on December 30. He said, "It seems there are many people who are experiencing depression these days. From my point of view, I don't know why people get depressed or have insomnia. There are good people around you. I hope everyone will always have a smile on their face by looking at us."

His statement sparked controversy particularly in light of the death of SHINee's Jonghyun, who died by suicide last month.

Baekhyun wrote, "I've been afraid of depression these days, and hypersensitive towards it. So when I was speaking to that fan for a significant amount of time, I became worried and suddenly afraid. At a fan signing event that should be filled with happiness, I felt the seriousness of what she, a fan that I wanted to make happy, told me. So I felt rushed because I might not ever be able to talk with this fan again after she left that spot."

"I wanted to encourage her with at least one more word, so I wanted to quickly say something because I felt like my words would be of help as she said she liked me. So there was something I carelessly said when I was encouraging her, and other fans at the spot, that there are good people and EXO by their side when they feel depressed or are going through hard times. I spoke too hastily even when I don't have the ability to organize and express my thoughts in a short period of time. I regret why I chose those words at that moment. All I wanted was to comfort and cheer her up."

"I'm afraid even while writing this that I might have made a mistake again in this post. However, I sincerely apologize. I'm sorry to that fan, and I apologize to everyone who felt hurt due to this matter. I will become more prudent about my words and actions."
