“The government will provide full support to revitalize the local market, the basis of our economy,” President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Tuesday during a visit to a traditional market in Cheongju, the capital of North Chungcheong Province.

This is the fourth time Yoon has visited the Yukgeori Market in Cheongju since he was a presidential candidate. As it was pointed out that the March 8 National Convention of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) has become cloudy, the president seems to have started to win the hearts of the people.

In a meeting with shopkeepers in the market, Yoon said, “Article 1 of the Constitution, which states that all power in the Republic of Korea comes from the people, feels even more overwhelming when I come to a traditional market.” The president said that the national economy lives only when the region is prosperous and the traditional market is revitalized.

He also pledged that he will take care of the people more carefully so that they can live better and listen to the difficulties. “I come to think I should work harder when I see shopkeepers working so hard in difficult situations,” he said. “When I visit a traditional market, I feel with my heart why I became president, who I should work for, and what I should work for.”

Prior to the visit to the market, Yoon visited Jincheon National Training Center where he received a briefing on this year’s national vision for sports. He met with athletes and said, “The government will foster the sports industry as a future growth engine by reflecting the voices from the field of sports.”

Yoon introduced the new government’s “sports vision” as a virtuous cycle of the three things: fostering the sports industry as a future growth engine, fostering elite sports talents, strengthening daily sports and expanding sports welfare.

“Sports are an industry, and we should not overlook its economic and industrial aspects. As an industrial infrastructure invested by the state, Korean sports will create tremendous economic value,” he said. “We will foster it well and create numerous quality jobs.”
