32.5% in S. Korea say Yoon Seok-youl would be a good president

With 10 months to go before the March 9 presidential election, 32.5% say Yoon Seok-youl would be a good president. Gyeonggi Province Gov. Lee Jae-myung ranked second with 25.1%, while former Democratic Party (DP) chief Lee Nak-yon ranked third with 11.2% in the latest poll. Independent lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo with 7.0%, People Party chairman Ahn Cheol-soo with 5.0%, and former prime minister Chung Sye-kyun with 4.6% followed. Former People Power Party (PPP) lawmaker Yoo Seung-min gained 2.5% and former justice minister Choo Mi-ae won 2.2%.

The poll was conducted on 1,013 voters nationwide on May 3 by pollster Realmeter. The ruling DP, which established its new leadership during the party’s congress held on May 2, will hold its primary around July and August. What’s catching attention is that former prime minister Chung Sye-kyun, who has yet to officially declare his bid for the presidency, scored 4.6% which is close to 5-percent barrier in the poll.

In terms of suitability for the DP candidates, governor Lee topped with 34.2% while former DP chief Lee received 15.3% and former prime minister Chung gained 8.6%. In terms of supporting scalability among the DP candidates, governor Lee gained 42.1%, followed by former chief Lee with 14.2%, former prime minister Chung with 8.8%, and former minister Choo Mi-ae with 5.4%. Besides, both Honam-based former chief Lee and former PM Chung gained 18.9% and 16.4%, respectively, hinting a tense competition within the margin of error. For the suitability of the pan-opposition candidates, former prosecutor general Yoon topped with 38.6%, followed by lawmaker Hong with 11.0%, chief Ahn with 8.1%, former lawmaker Yoo with 6.5%. In terms of supporting scalability among the pan-opposition bloc candidates, former prosecutor general Yoon topped with 42.7%, lawmaker Hong ranked second with 13.1%, and chief Ahn followed with 9.9%. 

Regarding the ability to resolve issues involving public welfare and economy, which is expected to be one of the key issues in the next presidential election amid the COVID-19 crisis, former prosecutor general Yoon topped with 32.5%, governor Lee ranked second with 24.4%, and former chief Lee followed with 10.7%. Lawmaker Hong received 6.6%, chief Ahn won 5.4%, and former prime minister Chung achieved 4.2%. In terms of ‘establishing fair values’ in our society, former prosecutor general Yoon topped with 34.3%, and governor Lee came second with 21.5%. Former chief Lee won 11.3% while Hong and Chung received 6.2% and 5.1%, respectively.

Regarding the perception of the Korean people on the next presidential election, more than half of respondents (53.8%) said they want an opposition candidate to be elected to change the current regime. 38% of respondents said they want a DP candidate to be elected to maintain the current regime. According to the poll, 40.7% showed political support for President Moon Jae-in while 57.5% said they do not support Moon. The approval rating for the PPP came to 31.0%, leading over the ruling DP with 29.0%. The approval rating for the People Party, the Open Minjoo Party, and the Justice Party came to 7.7%, 6.0%, and 4.2%, respectively.

The survey, commissioned by AsiaToday, has a 95 percent confidence level, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
