Indian student winner of Korea quiz wants to experience Korean culture

A staggering 12,500 students in India take part in '1st Korea India Friendship Quiz Competition 2016' organized by Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) for school students.

By Ha Man-joo, India correspondent, AsiaToday - An Indian student winner of Korea quiz is born. Varun Khurana, a high school student from Modern School in New Delhi, won the first place in the '1st Korea India Friendship Quiz Competition 2016' held at New Delhi Auditorium & Convention Center on Tuesday. Ashwini Gurung, a student from the Convent of Jesus and Mary School, won the second place.


The top four winners will undertake a six-day trip to Seoul to experience Korean culture. Besides, a 'Korea Visit program' will be conducted for those students who missed the chance to visit Korea in the quiz.

Athena Venture, chairman at consulting firm Athena Venture which jointly hosted the event with KCC, said, "We have arranged a program where students in the secondary education, who became interested in Korea through such competition, can experience Korea at an economic price. Through this program, nearly 1,000 Indian students will have an opportunity to visit Korea to experience Korean culture, such as learning Taekwondo, and making kimchi and hanji, and go on a field trip to Korea's developed industry scenes including Samsung Electronics."



The final round f the competition began in front of audience of 600 teachers, students, and parents from the participating schools, as well as reporters from Indian local media outlets.

A staggering 12,492 students from 50 schools in Delhi NCR took part in various levels of the competition. The event was the largest international quiz show in the NCR region.

Varun Khurana, who revealed that his goal is to become India's Chief Justice, said, "I would like to experience Korean culture and cuisine when I visit Korea. After coming back from Korea, I plan to learn Korean."

Kwak Mi-ra, education team manager of the KCC, said, "The fact that nearly 12,500 young Indian students became interested in Korea is brightening the future of Korea-India relations. Next year, we will expand it to other cities in the country and make the event a true Korea quiz competition for high school students in India."
