By Hong Soon-do, Beijing correspondent, AsiaToday - China has successfully completed the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The nation showcased its rising military might to a global audience and also made its 1.3 billion people proud of the country as a global power. Besides, Chinese President Xi Jinping's announcement of his plan to reduce the country's military personnel by 300,000 dispelled worries to a certain point that China could become a military superpower. In short, China has far exceeded its goal.

However, China should not be intoxicated with such success forever. There are remaining social and economic challenges limiting China to continue to be a leading country, and measures to fight such challenges are needed.

Taking reports of Sept. 3 reports of China's state-run media outlets including Xinhua News Agency, China should shed its image of a country with frequent accidents. The situation will get more complicated if another catastrophe strikes China following a ferry disaster on Yangtze river in June and a deadly chemical explosion in Tianjin in August. Public ire towards the government will likely to elevate. Huang Huimin, a professor at Renmin University of China, said, "A third mistake would be unacceptable. If a big tragedy occurs once more, confidence in the government will plummet, causing hardship to the government administration."

China should also keep an eye on stabilizing the whole economy including its shaky stock market. If it fails to control the economy, China could face a tragic hard landing as some are concerned of. The proper stock market intervention is one of pending issues of the government.

China should also put more efforts to maintain "Beijing blue" also known as "parade blue" that the city has been enjoying for a month, in order to improve the quality of life of Beijing citizens. If the capital becomes smoggy again, citizens who experienced clear skies would blame the government even further. It seems the military parade ended bringing challenges to the Chinese authorities.
